An Interview with Darren Brown - LogicMelon Director

10 April 2012

Q - Darren the business is now coming up to three years old. For you, what have been the highlights?

A - For me, it has been the speed of our growth. We have been lucky in that we have not had to educate the market about online recruitment or the benefits - What we have focused on is building customer-centric tools that support their business requirements. But key highlights for the business itself are;

  • Proving that theUKmarket is big enough for two players.
  • The last year has been amazing with a 250% growth in our client base and most new business coming from referrals. We've also increased our headcount fourfold to support these wins!
  • The speed of growth and our market share growth.
  • The development of a new suite of new products that take Logic Melon beyond the core successful posting business; including a number of social media apps - Facebook applications, full LinkedIn integration for both posting and sourcing, all of which have been well received by our corporate client base.
  • Growing the business internationally, with SA being a success story.

Q - You guys have your fingers on the pulse of the recruitment market - what are the key trends you've seen over the last year?

  • Postings are up sevenfold. This, of course, is a result of the new business we have been wining but we know the market has seen average increase of 15%+
  • Applications are up tenfold and this, unfortunately, does reflect the market, as well as our new business wins.
  • Clients are taking full advantage of multi-posting technology and are using free job boards - they're no longer fearful of the 'Free Trial'.

Q - We keep hearing about the death of the job board but from the stats you have shared regarding the volume of jobs posted and applications received make this seem over-stated. BUT are you seeing any trends with social media?

A - Facebook has seen a sevenfold increase in postings to a wall, group or app. Twitter has seen a fivefold increase in posting. And as for LinkedIn, we're now seeing clients posting to LinkedIn as opposed to using it just as a searching tool and expect significant growth in postings in future years.

Q - What one piece of advice would you give to a client with regards to Facebook?

A - There has been a trend away from posting jobs on the Facebook wall. Use your wall for information, candidate attraction and branding. Build a page and direct traffic to it from the content on your wall. If you have a very special role you can share it on the wall but a wall full of jobs seems to push candidates away.

Q - Do you have any Twitter advice?

A - We would really recommend that clients don't just post jobs to Twitter, but use content to engage with their audience and spread some jobs amongst this content. There is a second view which is to have multiple twitter feeds, one for company content and niche specific ones for solely job content. We have seen clients use both methods effectively.

Q - How about LinkedIn?

A - We suggest you search LinkedIn first, garner your network, use LinkedIn recruiter products if your candidates are on LinkedIn and use postings more to attract a passive audience. If your candidates are in group then share "job status updates" into the groups to garner attention.
